Title of the Talk: An Analysis of The State’s Obligation to Provide Access to Sufficient Water
Desan Iyer is a full Professor in Law. He served previously as the Deputy Dean, Teaching and Learning at the Faculty of Commerce, Administration and Law at the University of Zululand as well as Acting Registrar and Head of the Law Department. He is also an Admitted Attorney and Mediator who has practiced the law before transcending into Higher Education. His research areas include Child Law, Labour Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning as well as Nonverbal and Legal Communication. He has presented papers at local as well as international conferences and served on the editorial board of numerous journals. He has also served as external examiner for postgraduate studies at several institutions. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students to completion, including ten doctoral students in recent years. In addition to being an acclaimed poet, he has published extensively in local and international accredited law journals. He has numerous peer reviewed articles to his name. In recent years, he has received numerous research awards both locally and internationally. His recent projects include “Promoting Legal Consciousness and Protecting Local Indigenous Knowledge”. He is also involved in legal training for various stakeholders in the Zululand area including local schools and municipalities. He is currently the Chair of the Student Disciplinary Committee, Deputy Chair of the Institutional Forum and a member of the Legal Committee at the Institution.
