Title of the talk: Climate change in the tropics: why less is more
Professor Serban Proches is an expert in the fields of biodiversity, biogeography and climate change. He has over 80 publications with highly reputed ISI-listed journals, including one each in Nature and Science, and two in Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution and Systematics. He has acted as a reviewer on over 80 journal manuscripts also acted as handling editor on nearly as many, mostly for Journal of Biogeography. He has over 4300 citations on Google Scholar. He is working since 2008 in the Discipline of Geography at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, starting as Senior Lecturer and progressing to Full Professor. His main taught course was initially a one-term third-year course entitled ‘Biogeography’. A couple of years into his tenure, he has expanded this to a full semester course entitled ‘Biogeography and Climatic Change’, and this is the form in which he teaches it to the present day. He was the 2009 recipient of President’s award from the National Research Foundation of South Africa.
