Chair of the Department of Geosciences and the Director of the Master of Environmental Science and Management Program, University of Rhode Island, Kingston RI, USA
Title of the Talk: Fate, Transport and Remediation Options for Emerging Contaminants
Professor Thomas B. Boving is a distinguished expert in Environmental Hydrogeology with a Ph.D. in Hydrology and Water Resources Management from the University of Arizona, Tucson (1999), and a Diploma (M.S.) in Geology from the University of Tübingen, Germany (1993). He is currently the Chair of the Department of Geosciences and the Director of the Master of Environmental Science and Management Program at the University of Rhode Island (URI). He also directs the URI Graduate Certificate in Hydrology Program and holds a joint appointment with the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Since joining URI in 1999, Professor Boving has advanced through the ranks, becoming a full Professor in 2010. His international engagements include visiting professorships at institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and Universitas Islam Indonesia, as well as multiple Fulbright fellowships. He has been an adjunct faculty member at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani – Goa, since 2019, and an associate at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India, since 2008. Professor Boving’s research focuses on drinking water quality and treatment, innovative soil and groundwater remediation technologies, coastal aquifers, and community outreach for water treatment systems. His work has led to significant field research projects funded by organizations such as the Science and Engineering Research Board of India, U.S. AID, and the U.S. Geological Survey. Notable recent projects include studying the fate and transport of emerging contaminants, sensor-controlled riverbank filtration systems, and PFAS contamination attenuation. He actively participates in professional organizations, notably as Chair of the Groundwater Quality Commission for the International Association of Hydrologists. Fluent in English and German, with beginner skills in Bahasa Indonesia, Professor Boving is renowned for his collaborative and impactful research contributions in environmental hydrogeology.
